Hello and Welcome to Cool Water Publishing House LLC, an independent, black-owned, Baltimore City based publishing company, established in 2021.
Telling our stories, whether it's through drawings, novels, poems, memoirs, music, film scripts, or personal entries in journals, is vital to our psyche. In his autobiography, Narrative Of The Life Of Frederick Douglass, Frederick Douglass recounts the day his master caught his mistress teaching him how to read. Among other discouraging things, his master states that education will "ruin a slave ... If you give a nigger an inch, he'll take an el." Douglass writes, "From that moment, I understood the pathway from slavery to freedom." Our mission at Cool Water Publishing House is to provide unique, realistic literature and other resources that uplift, celebrate, educate, inspire, entertain, and empower the black community so we can “take an el” and beyond.
In 2009, a Malawian boy named William Kamkwamba went to his local library and checked out a book entitled Using Energy, which came from the International Book Bank located in Baltimore. From this book, Kamkwamba learned how to build a windmill, which generated electricity to his village and also irrigated crops. Kamkwamba's life and the lives of the people in his village changed for the better the day he read that book.
The mission of Cool Water Bookshop is to help people change their worlds and the world at large through books that inspire them to pursue their dreams or a hobby they're passionate about, encourage them to become part of the solution to a problem, inform them of the issues that exist in the world, and give them a temporary escape from the crises in their lives.
